Forest, Follies and Fine Wines

Freedom Holiday Self Guided Grading Level 2
8 days/7 nights Price - £585pp* Tour Code CZ002

The area once known as the Great Moravian Empire, with a landscape shaped by two mighty rivers, is the location for this tour. Times have changed! When confronted with the peacefulness of this beautiful countryside characterized by forests, vineyards and romantic creeks flowing from the rivers, it is difficult to imagine the turbulent past of fighting and border feuds were it not for the presence of so many monuments and the variety of architecture. You will find examples of roman, gothic, renaissance and baroque styles in abundance. You will also be stirred by the friendliness of the Moravian people. Maybe it is the high consumption of wine and Slivovice (home made plum brandy) that keeps them in a good mood all the time! This area is also well known for its good food and local wine.

The route follows the border of Slovakia, Moravia and Austria. Starting in Valtice close to the border with Slovakia, you will cycle to Breclav, the gateway to the Lednice-Valtice area renowned for its rich cultural history, folk art traditions and copious monuments. Following the border with Austria in a westerly direction you will eventually arrive at the National Park Podyji, a stunningly beautiful valley through which winds the Dyje (Thaya) River. The route goes through several places that played important roles in the history of this country including Znojmo, the regional capital and one of the oldest towns in the Czech Republic (dating back to 6th century). The town and the surrounding area is well known as a wine producing area so there are lots of opportunities to visit wine cellars and to sample the local produce. There are 2 castles worth a visit on the way – Vranov, thought to be one of the most beautiful castles in the country, and Bitov, situated on a rock overlooking a lake and visible from afar. The end of the tour is in Telc, the best preserved Renaissance town north of the Alps well known around the world for its unique preserved square and the magnificent renaissance chateau.
