Royal Northern Sealand

Freedom Holiday Self Guided Grading Level 2
8 days/7 nights Price - £575pp Tour Code DK001

An excellent combination of countryside, beaches, history and heritage. The major attractions on this tour are Copenhagen, Hamlet's castle Kronborg, the modern art museum Louisiana, the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde and the National Museum at the beautiful castle Frederiksborg. The accommodation is very varied from tastefully restored old hotels, to country inns and an old fashioned boarding house surrounded by fields.

This tour is not challenging, and several stages may be shortened by using the train.

In Copenhagen you will have time to discover the mediaeval heart of this wonderful city, as well as some of the many excellent restaurants. Riding out of Copenhagen towards Helsingør you can visit Hamlet's castle Kronborg, enjoy Dyrehaven, the royal hunting ground, and at Rungsted you can visit the home of the famous Danish author Karen Blixen (Out of Africa). You will have time to explore the unique interior of the Frederiksborg Castle, located in the middle of a lake, surrounded by baroque gardens. Continuing on through forests and fields on a paved cycle route takes you to Ramløse and the lake Arresø. On the way to Hundested there is an excellent opportunity for a swim at the Northern Sealand beaches. Then it’s on through the idyllic fishing hamlet Lynæs to the small ferryboat at Sølager, which will take you to the other side of the fiord and the forest Nordskoven, famous for its old oak trees. Coming out of the forest you will see the castle Jægerspris Slot and be able to visit the beautifully restored manor house Selsø Slot. Continuing through forest and undulating fields brings you to the open-air museum Lejre where you can experience daily life from Iron Age to Viking-Age. In the large cathedral of Roskilde, the former Danish capital, the kings and queens of Denmark lie buried. The Vikings lived at Roskilde and their ships can still be seen here. The path takes you through the picturesque villages that line the beaches south of the capital, away from the traffic and all the way back into the centre of Copenhagen. You have the evening to explore this beautiful city and visit the Tivoli Gardens.
