Romantic Road Part 1 - Würzburg to Rothenburg

Freedom Holiday Self Guided Grading Level 2
5 days/4 nights Price - £305pp Tour Code GE008

No citizen in the Middle Ages would have thought that this road would become one of the most important holiday pathways in the future. The old trade route retained its historic image and its romantic atmosphere throughout the ages.

The episcopal and the royal residence and the fairy tale Bavarian castles provide a frame for a relaxing bike tour. Along the rivers Main and Tauber on bicycle paths and small country roads, through quiet and charming landscapes near the Roman road. A bike tour for anyone.

Where is Würzburg? Take a map of Germany, put your finger in the middle to find Frankfurt and slip a little bit to east and then to south. Now you are normally in Lower Franconia (if your fingers are not too big or sliding too fast), just between Nuernberg and Frankfurt.

Daily Itinerary

Day 1 Würzburg

Starting point of your journey is the town of Würzburg. Considered by Goethe to be one of the most beautiful towns in Germany, Würzburg has many churches, as well as an imposing citadel. Its most remarkable monument is the Residenz, one of the largest and most beautiful baroque palaces in Germany, surrounded by wonderful gardens.

Day 2 Würzburg - Wertheim 25 miles.

You leave Würzburg on a woody path through the Steinbach valley. Your cycle route takes you through small villages and near Bettingen you meet once more the river Main. On your way take the opportunity to visit the gothic fortress-church, with the Saint Mary´s altar, at Dertingen. Now there are only a few kilometres left until you reach Wertheim. This small town is located picturesquely at the mouth of the Tauber as it flows into the Main. The beautiful castle ruin made of striking red sandstone lies high above the old city.

Day 3 Wertheim - Bad Mergentheim 31 miles.

Today, you leave the Main and cycle further on through the Tauber valley and on the way you will visit the lovely town of Tauberbischofsheim with its great castle. It is a town surrounded by hills, forests, vinyards and farmland. To keep the old houses and history alive the first pedestrian area in Baden-Württemberg was founded here. This town has an interesting history that you can see from the many buildings and monuments. From now on you follow the Romantic Road to Bad Mergentheim

RothenburgDay 4 Bad Mergentheim - Rothenburg ob der Tauber 30 miles.

First of all you should plan a visit of the lively and friendly spa town of Bad Mergentheim. It has a pretty renaissance market place surrounded by splendid buildings. Near to it there is the castle with a museum. Soon after leaving Bad Mergentheim you can visit the water fortress of Weikersheim with its park in rococo-style. At Creglingen you might visit the well-known Saint Mary's altar carved by the most famous woodcarver of all, Tilmann Riemenschneider. Finally there's the highlight of your journey, Rothenburg. Stroll around through this world famous gothic town that is surrounded by thick walls with seven doors. Shortly before midnight, you can make a trip through the town with the night watchman.

Day 5 Depart Rothenburg ob der Tauber

The journey is over and it is time to make your way home.
