Day 1 Arrival in Ulverston
you will arrive in Ulverston (there is a station if you are coming by train) and will have the rest of the day to explore the town and immediate surroundings. You might like to take a look at the Laurel & Hardy Museum or the award-winning Lanternhouse, one of the most unusual and outstanding buildings in Ulverston. Or you might prefer simply to stroll around the narrow, cobbled streets, browsing in the speciality shops. There is a twice-weekly street market. Your first night will be in Ulverston, giving you the evening to sample the local fare and relax.
Day 2 Ulverston to Cartmel 22 miles.
Your hire bikes will be available for you on the morning and then the route will take you on quiet lanes through picturesque ancient settlements to Cartmel, for your next night's accommodation. The village of Cartmel is truly idyllic with a picturesque market square (complete with fish slabs) surrounded by an assortment of genuine olde-worlde buildings. The village grew up around the twelfth century Priory Church - guided tours are held on Wednesdays throughout the summer.
Day 3 Circular route from Cartmel 27 or 35 miles.
Today provides you with some options - a choice of circular routes taking in the southern shores of Windermere, Grizedale Forest and perhaps even Coniston Water before bringing you back to Cartmel for the next night. You might like to take in some of the local attractions such as a visit to Holker Hall, a stately home that also houses the Lakeland Motor Museum or a ride on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, a little train that steams its way through the beautiful Leven Valley.
Day 4 Cartmel to Ulverston 30 miles.
Brings you back on an alternative route to Ulverston skirting around the edge of Morecambe Bay, giving an opportunity to view some of the local attractions such as Conishead Priory or Gleaston Water Mill. A further night's accommodation at Ulverston can be arranged if required.
